LaCie has released a new external slim Blu-ray Disc recorder/player that doesn’t require a power supply other than a USB 2.0 connection. The LaCie Slim supports Blu-ray 3D, up to eight channels of audio at 192kHz/32 streams, and will store up to four hours of HD video on a BD-50. The LaCie Slim is also capable of rewriting Blu-ray Discs in case you make a mistake somewhere within those 50 gigs.
Software packaged with the drive includes the Cyberlink Blu-ray Disc Suite allowing you to burn and edit video using Power2Go 6 and PowerDirector 8 respectively. The drive supports Windows XP SP 2, Vista, and 7 as well as Mac OS X and Linux platforms.
While LaCie’s more expensive d2 Blu-Ray 12x Recorder/Player released in March 2010 carries an MSRP of $660, the new state-of-the-art LaCie “Slim” drive lists for a reasonable $264.99. The drive also comes with a 2-year limited warranty.
