Disney+ is rolling out the Disney+ app today on supporting platforms and while much of the focus has been on content we wanted to shed some light on the amount of 4k, HDR, and Dolby Atmos titles available.
The most-anticipated titles on Disney+ can probably be found in the Star Wars franchise, with the premiere of The Mandalorian original series showcasing the service and almost the entire “Skywalker Saga” ready to stream in Ultra HD (with the exception of ‘The Last Jedi” arriving on Dec. 26). The launch of “original” and “prequel” trilogies on Disney+ marks the first time any of those Star Wars films have been available in 4k. And, the movies feature HDR10/Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio.
Marvel Studios films are also front and center. Disney+ doesn’t have all of the MCU films yet but they did launch with Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Endgame, Iron Man, Iron Man 3, all three Captain America films, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2, Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp, all of which stream in 4k with HDR10 and Dolby Atmos audio.
The service also offers a large number of Disney animated hits that have been recently released to Ultra HD Blu-ray such as Frozen (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1), Moana (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1), Tangled (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1), and Inside Out (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1).
Other titles of note that are available in 4k/HDR with Dolby Atmos include A Wrinkle In Time (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1), Dumbo (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1), National Treasure (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1), And, just in case it wasn’t implied above Star Wars: The Force Awakens (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/5.1),
Movies that deliver the 4k/HDR experience but without Dolby Atmos audio include Noelle (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, 5.1), Free Solo (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, 5.1), 10 Things I Hate About You (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, 5.1), and Lady and the Tramp (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, 5.1). Original series Encore (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, 5.1) and High School Musical: The Musical Series (4k, HDR10/Dolby Vision, 5.1) also offer 5.1 channel audio at best.
The HDR titles on Disney+ seem to support both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, which is particularly useful for those who have devices that support one or the other. An HDR TV, however, should be able to convert the HDR either way though as long as it gets there through a supporting device or app. See a complete list of Disney+ titles including 4k, HDR, & Dolby Atmos.
We should mention the Dolby Atmos signal was picked without a hitch through Apple TV 4k on a Samsung HW-K850 soundbar.
