Warner Bros. Pictures released the first official teaser trailer for Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix. The film is slated for release in the US on Oct. 4, 2019, as well as other countries starting on Oct. 3. Joker was directed and co-written by Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Due Date, Old School), and produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.
So far reviews of the teaser have been overwhelmingly positive. One YouTube reviewer asks, “Who else can’t stop watching this trailer?” Another commented, “DC is getting really dark.” The latter may have it right. Joker looks like more of a psychological thriller than a supervillain origin film. But one would imagine Phillips will bring some humorous moments to the film simply based on his previous experience in the genre. There have to be some “light” moments, doesn’t there?
It certainly looks like Joaquin Phoenix stepped into his role as Joker, although it’s hard not picture him as Theodore in the movie Her given the intimacy of the part. From the bits of footage in the teaser trailer it would seem Phoenix has borrowed a little bit from previous Joker actors like Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Jared Leto, and Heath Ledger, to name a few. But, it will be interesting to see what Phoenix brings to his own rendition of the famous DC character.
