Apple TV has added Dolby Atmos audio to approximately 200 titles in their iTunes movie library such as Deadpool, John Wick, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and The Hunger Games franchise films.
The immersive audio format will play through 5th-generation Apple TV 4k players with the latest tvOS 12 update released on Sept. 17, and supports up to 7.1.4 channels with dimensional audio effects such as overhead sound.
Most of the Atmos titles on Apple also feature 4k resolution with HDR (either Dolby Vision or HDR10), but there are a couple dozen films with Atmos but only HD resolution like 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, Higher Power, and Swiss Army Man.
Apple automatically upgrades the audio on previously purchased titles so there is no charge for the upgrade.
Dolby Atmos is backwards compatible with Dolby TrueHD 7.1 on home audio/theater systems that don’t support it, so even if your audio system won’t play Atmos you can still get more channels than the traditional Dolby 5.1 surround sound available with most iTunes titles.

I have the Apple TV 4k but I haven’t upgraded my display yet, which Apple TV automatically detects. But I played Ready Player One last night and it was not Atmos. Does this mean, that I get Atmos only when the Apple TV outputs 4k?
Hi Anton. Apple TV will output Dolby Atmos if you have a sound system that supports it. If your sound bar or multi-speaker system does not support Atmos it will revert to the closest possible — like TrueHD 7.1 or Dolby 5.1.
Not in Sweden maybe 20-30 movies have atmos. Apple doesent care about people outside united states.
