Roku has announced their free, ad-supported Roku Channel will be launching on select Samsung Smart TVs this summer, although the company was not specific about which models or years would support the app.
The Roku Channel launched last fall, offering on-demand video from studios such as Lionsgate, MGM, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. with commercial breaks. Recently added movies on the platform include feature films such as Big Fish, Hugo, and There Will Be Blood.
Roku also uses the channel to help promote publishers such as American Classics, Fandor, FilmRise, Nosey, OVGuide, Popcornflix, Vidmark, and YuYu. The Roku Channel is typically among the Top 20 in Roku’s channel store, and has actually ranked as high as No. 3 in ad-supported app channels.
Roku claims advertising breaks on the AVOD channel account for about half the amount of time per hour taken by linear TV commercials.
“Roku has always been a leader in offering free entertainment options for our customers, and we’re excited to extend The Roku Channel to select Samsung TV customers,” said Scott Rosenberg on the official Roku Blog.
