Today, Google Play’s movie service starting offering 4k movies to purchase or rent. The new UHD resolution is only viewable on select devices though, for now limited to Chromecast Ultra ($69) connected to a 4k TV, Sony Bravia Android TVs, and the Android Xiaomi Mi Box 3 media player.
Google provided a short list of titles available in 4k (labeled UHD) such as Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Lucy, and Everest, but from a PC the only movie we found available to purchase in UHD was The Secret Life of Pets for $29.99. (Here’s an updated list of all 4k UHD titles on Google Play.)
If $30 seems steep, right now Google Play is offering 50% off any one movie purchase or rental. That means you can get The Secret Life of Pets in Ultra HD for $15. We haven’t heard yet if HDR specs are included, but we’ll revise this article once we find out. (Note: If you have a Chromecast Ultra and want to help us update this article let us know!)
Most 4k movies on Google Play are likely to sell for $29.99 each, the same price as UHD titles on Walmart’s Vudu.
