It’s Tuesday again, and among the many Blu-ray and DVD releases are two new 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray discs: Ang Lee’s groundbreaking film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), and the sequel to Independence Day (1996) released twenty years later, Independence Day Resurgence.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray comes from a newly mastered 4k version of the film and includes new special features such as six never-before-seen deleted scenes, a retrospective with Ang Lee, documentary “The Making of Crouching Tiger. Hidden Dragon,” and “A Love Before Time” music videos.
In Mandarin, the soundtrack can be heard in Dolby Atmos (compatible with Dolby TrueHD 7.1). But in English, audio is provided in five-channel DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. The Blu-ray is formatted in 4K (2160p) resolution but does not appear to feature HDR. A digital copy is provided via UltraViolet partners. Price: $22.99
Independence Day Resurgence
20th Century Fox celebrated 20 years since the release of Independence Day by releasing Independence Day Resurgence to theaters worldwide, including 3D cinemas, last June. Now, day-and-date with Blu-ray and DVD, the film is available in 4k resolution that offers 4-times the resolution of conventional Blu-ray and features HDR (High Dynamic Range) color specifications.
The English soundtrack is available in Dolby Atmos (backwards compatible with Dolby TrueHD 7.1), with video formatted in 4k HEVC/H.265 at 2160p resolution. Price: $24.99
