Twitter is breaking new ground by live-streaming select matches from the 2016 Wimbledon tennis matches in London today. The video streams are being provided by partner ESPN as well as match organizers, and, are available in high definition if bandwidth allows.
Watching tennis on a smart phone isn’t exactly a premium experience, although Twitter streams can be viewed on PC monitors and tablets. The live-stream of Wimbledon includes comments from Twitter users about the match that either show up on the bottom of the video screen or in a column if screen size allows.
The live-stream is really just that — there is no way to rewind or pause the video — only expand the viewer and control audio. But Twitter has said that the Wimbledon streaming is “an extremely early and incomplete test experience.” You can expect Twitter engineers and designers to improve the experience in due time.
Twitter also recently announced a $10M deal with the NFL to stream all ten of the 2016 Thursday Night Football games on Twitter.
