After the finale of Game of Thrones Season 6 over one million people downloaded the episode within the first eight hours, that according to the website TorrentFreak that measures activity on the peer-to-peer file sharing network BitTorrent. The website expects millions more to download the episode in the days to come.
The website said over 350,000 BitTorrent users were actively sharing the episode, even after HBO made a stand this year against piracy and as a result the series cannot be found on many popular sharing websites. The network sent notices to ISPs informing them to “take the proper steps to prevent further downloading or sharing of unauthorized content and additional infringement notices.”
This year, screeners of their first four episodes of Game of Thrones Season 6 were leaked before being broadcast.
The most popular file shared is an HD version of the 69-minute season finale titled “The Winds of Winter.” At just over one gigabyte, it’s an increase in video quality (and file size) compared previous year’s most popular files which were only SD quality.
Last year, over 8 million people watched the premiere of Season 5 live while it was estimated 13 million people downloaded the episode.
