Whereas for centuries, the term ‘pirates’ conjured up eye patch-wearing, wooden-legged, parrot-lovin sailors, these days it brings to mind one of two things: those bad guys in Captain Phillips, or the millions of people who download Captain Phillips for free. Yes, illegal movie downloads are hotter than ever, and with this polar vortex action, we need all the heat we can get. Let’s warm up with the top 10 pirated movies of 2013!
According to TorrentFreak, number one on the list is The Hobbit, and maybe that’s not such a big surprise, given the movie’s nerdcore fanbase and their comfort with all things digital (and expecting it all to be free). At an estimated 8.4 million downloads, that’s a lot of Bilbo Baggins. Of course the movie was also released way back in December 2012, giving it a full year of availability.
Django Unchained, Fast and Furious 6, and Iron Man 3 all make sense in the 2 through 4 slots, but then, um, Silver Linings Playbook? Apparently pirating isn’t just for lads, but lassies as well. Here’s the complete list:
1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – 8,400,000
2. Django Unchained – 8,100,000
3. Fast And Furious – 6 7,900,000
4. Iron Man 3 – 7,600,000
5. Silver Linings Playbook – 7,500,000
