AT&T has announced expansion of the U-verse GigaPower internet services to twice as many homes in the Austin area this year, including Zilker, Homestead, and North Lamar among other Austin city neighborhoods. The company also promises up to 1Gbps upgrades at no extra charge to customers who sign up for the U-verse High Speed Internet 300 when the broadband service is upgraded later this year.
The all-fiber network currently provides 300 megabits per second downstream, improving HD television viewing, multiplayer online gaming, and other high bandwidth activities. At 300Mbps, an HD movie can be downloaded in less than 2 minutes. When the 1Gbps service is launched, an HD movie will download in less than 36 seconds, according to AT&T testing results.
Within the city of Austin, the GigaPower 300Mbps service is available in neighborhoods that include Bryker Woods, Cherrywood, French Place, Mueller, Old Enfield, and Tarrytown. Around the city the service is available in areas that include Bastrop, Cedar Park, Dripping Springs, Jollyville, Lakeway, Leander, Pflugerville, and Round Rock.
“Austinites consume data at rates 15 percent to 20 percent higher than the average U-verse user,” said Dahna Hull, vice president and general manager, Austin, AT&T Services Inc.
