Walmart’s Vudu service has overtaken Amazon and Sony in terms of online movie sales, that according to a Financial Times report yesterday which cites data provided by IHS Screen Digest. For anyone questioning Walmart’s purchase of Vudu in early 2010, IHS found online movies purchased through Vudu rose from 1-percent in the first half of 2010 to 5.3-percent in the first half of this year. Vudu’s growth knocked PlayStation 3 online rentals out of third place.
Apple is still the big player in online movie rentals and sales, commanding about 65-percent of the market with its iTunes service. Zune Marketplace, owned by Microsoft, was the second largest player in the first half of this year owning about 16-percent.
