Today at the GamesCom conference in Germany, Sony announced they are dropping the price of the PlayStation 3. In the US and UK, the $299 and euro 299 160GB PS3 is dropping to $249 and euro 249. In Japan, the 160GB will drop from 29,980 yen to (including tax) to 24,980 yen (including tax). The price drop represents a significant reduction and one that puts the 160GB somewhere between Microsoft’s 250GB Xbox 360 which sells for $299 and the less expensive 4GB “Arcade” console which sells for $199.
The price of Sony’s 320GB PlayStation 3 has also dropped. The 320GB (formerly $349 and euro 349), is now $299 and euro 299. In Japan, the currently priced 320GB at 34,980 yen (including tax) will drop to 29,980 yen (including tax).
The new pricing takes effect immediately in North America and Europe (although we keep checking Amazon to see the reflected price change). In Japan, the price changes will take effect on August 18, 2011.
