LG HDTVs and Blu-ray players shipping in 2011 with Netcast will be loaded with Plex software, an open platform which enables viewing and management of media on TVs, PCs, and mobile devices. The software is user friendly, combines personal and online content, and doesn’t require additional hardware. Yet, Plex can do what media boxes like Apple TV and Boxee Box do without taking up any real estate.
Third-party developers are able to create Plex plug-ins (there are currently close to 200 available) which include iTunes, Netflix, CNN, and YouTube. The Plex platform also provides solutions for content creators to output for a variety of devices.
Plex apps for OSX and iOS are available to download at http://dev.plexapp.com. Windows and Android versions of the apps are in development.
