Sony and FIFA announce first World Cup in 3D

fifa-world-cup-south-africa-2010Sony and FIFA announced today they would be producing the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 3D. Using Sony 3D cameras, FIFA will cover up to 25 matches of the FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa in 2010. Sony intends to release the official 3D film on Blu-ray Disc, although 3D specification of BD is still underway.

Trailers for the 3D film will be viewable in “Fan Fest” areas located in 7 cities worldwide including Berlin, London, Mexico City, Paris, Rio De Janeiro, Rome, and Sydney. Retail outlets including Sony stores will also display the promotional 3D trailers.

Sony says throughout 2010 they will be integrating 3D compatibility into many of their products including BRAVIA HDTVs, Blu-ray recorders and players, Playstation 3 and VAIO notebooks.

“The transition to 3D is underway, and, we, at Sony, intend to be leaders in every aspect,” said Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President of Sony Corporation.

“The news that the FIFA World Cup will be filmed in 3D for the first time will certainly increase the uptake rate of 3D TVs in the home and develop the installed base earlier than would otherwise have been the case,” said Tom Morrod, Senior Analyst, TV Technology at Screen Digest.
