Sky TV launches HD service

Sky TV New Yealand announced yesterday their first HD channel offerings. Branded My Sky HDi, the new service will launch with Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2, Sky Movies and Sky Movies Greats. The television service provider will also be providing 2010 & 2012 Olympics coverage.

Customers in New Yealand will be able to upgrade to the service for $49.95, which includes an improved set-top box with the ability to record two programs at once to a hard drive that has doubled in size from the last model. The box is also ready for any IPTV content via an ethernet port.

Reports from New Yealand publications say the broadcasts will be in 1080i, although it was previously believed the be 720p. Audio will broadcast in the 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound format.

Along with their sports coverage on Sky Sports 1 & 2, Sky has acquired the rights to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Movies that will debut in high-definition include hits like “Spiderman 3”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: World’s End” and “The Bourne Ultimatum”.
