There will never be another Superman like the late Christopher Reeve, but soon we’ll be able to see his portrayal of the Man of Steel in 4k resolution on Ultra HD Blu-ray. The 4k disc release will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Superman: The Movie to theaters in 1978, a movie that made us all believe we could fly and find the hero within ourselves.
Directed by Richard Donner, Superman: The Movie was nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Sound, Best Film Editing and Best Music, Original Score (John Williams). The movie, officially titled Superman, also starred Gene Hackman, Margo Kidder and Marlon Brando.
Originally shot in 35 mm with a Panavision system, the Ultra HD Blu-ray edition presents Superman: The Movie in 2160p resolution at 2:40.1 aspect ratio with HDR provided via Dolby Vision spec. A newly remastered soundtrack is provided in Dolby Atmos, backed by Dolby TrueHD 7.1.
The Blu-ray Disc, included in the combo edition from Warner Bros., displays the movie in 1080p with the soundtrack in DTS-HD Master Audio. Subtitles are provided in English SDH, French and Spanish.
Bonus material includes commentary by Producer Pierre Spengler and Producer Ilva Salkind (on both Blu-ray and 4k Blu-ray), The Making of Superman: The Movie 1978 TV Special, theatrical trailers, TV Spot and more.
As far as the Digital Copy, we’re hoping it will include a 4k redemption code but we’re not sure which digital distributors will provide an upgraded digital version of the film. We’ll let you know if we hear anything. Update: The digital version is available in 4k UHD.
