Summit Entertainment’s fantasy drama Twilight will release to 4k Blu-ray to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its theatrical release, but there are a couple things to mention about this new edition that may be disappointing to fans.
First, the Ultra HD Blu-ray combo will include a 4k Blu-ray, 2k Blu-ray, and Digital Copy, but the Extended Edition of the film will only be available in digital format. It seems odd not to offer the extended edition on disc, especially since it’s just another four-and-a-half minutes, but hopefully the digital copy will be redeemable in 4k.
Second, this won’t be a native 4k transfer. The film was originally shot in 35mm film but mastered in only 2k. So, unless they created a new 4k master this is pretty much upscaling. It doesn’t mean it won’t look good in 4k though, as there are plenty of 4k Blu-rays that look great from 2k masters.
However, it does appear that Twilight will be enhanced by HDR (High Dynamic Range) color, which may or may not look good for this film (you can always turn it off in your 4k Blu-ray player settings). The audio has also been upgraded to Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD from previous Blu-ray versions with 5.1. The audio alone is something to be excited about.
There’s also a new bonus feature titled “Twilight Tour…10 Years Later” included with the many extras on the Blu-ray Disc.
Supposedly, Lionsgate will also be offering a boxed set with all the franchise films, possibly in the same way Summit released the Twilight Forever: The Complete Saga 10-disc Boxed Set back in 2013.
Pre-orders of Twilight on Ultra HD Blu-ray are currently available for $17.99 (List: $22.99).
