Verizon being sued by ESPN over Custom TV packages

When Verizon announced new Custom TV packages that are meant to give customers more choice in the channels they pay for, Disney’s ESPN spoke up about the arrangement of certain sports packages that separated ESPN and ESPN2 — channels that under existing the contract are meant to be distributed together.

Verizon went ahead with the launch of their Custom TV packages as planned on April 19th, and apparently made no changes to how ESPN and ESPN2 were offered. From a consumer point-of-view, it was unclear how the two channels were arranged (see screenshot below from Verizon Custom TV package options).

Today, a court filing reveals that ESPN is in fact suing Verizon for breach of contract.

In the suit, ESPN says Verizon is “unfairly depriving” it of “the benefits of its bargain.” The company added, “We simply ask that Verizon abide by the terms of our contracts.”
