The news out of Luxemburg early this morning may have been a surprise to some, but others may have foreseen the inevitable transition of Amazon’s UK-based LOVEFiLM streaming service to their Prime Instant Video service. In short, Amazon’s LOVEFiLM will become Prime in the UK and Germany on Wednesday, February 26.
The Prime service will be offered for £79 a year, which Amazon says is a 35% savings from what a customer would pay for the two separate services. Amazon’s Prime service offers unlimited one-day free shipping on many products, approximately 500,000 Kindle books to borrow, and unlimited streaming from the company’s library of movies and TV shows.
Prime subscribers have the ability to stream video through browsers on their PCs and Macs, as well as through apps for the Kindle Fire, iPad and iPhone, Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, Nintendo and other devices. Smart TVs from Samsung, Sony, LG and other manufacturers are also able to stream video from Prime.
Amazon is currently offering Prime service at a special price of £49 for the year, up until the launch date of Feb. 26.
