The Beatles first Ed Sullivan appearance to be celebrated on CBS

Today CBS announced a two-hour special will air on February 9, 2014 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ first appearance on the The Ed Sullivan Show. The show, called a salute to the Beatles, will consist of contemporary artists (not yet announced) who will perform covers of the songs the Beatles played on The Ed Sullivan Show, marking the beginning of Beatlemania in the US. CBS says the special be recorded the day after the 2014 Grammy Awards, and will air 50 years to the exact day of the Beatles appearance in 1963.

CBS will also be recognizing the death of President John F. Kennedy by streaming CBS News’ historic coverage of the assassination on CBSNews.com. The streaming will start at 1:48 p.m. ET on Nov. 22 — exactly 50 years later to the day.
