A good week for high definition.

This week’s hi def releases include: The Good Shepard, G.I. Jane, Identity, King Arthur, and Volver. Blu-ray has 4 releases, HD DVD with only one, but it’s a good one…

The Good Shepherd [HD DVD]
(Universal Studios)

Starring: WOW! Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Alec Baldwin, Robert De Niro, William Hurt, Joe Pesci, John Turturro…

Directed by Robert De Niro, and nominated for an Oscar, The Good Shepard follows Edward Wilson, the only witness to his father’s suicide who is eventually recruited by the OSS, (the predecessor of the CIA).

Format: Coded in MPEG-4 AVC at 1080p, with Dolby Digital 5.1 for audio. Widescreen aspect ratio is 2.35:1.

G.I. Jane [Blu-ray]
(Buena Vista Home Entertainment)

Directed by Ridley Scott this movie may remind you of a tough Sigourney Weaver in Alien from 1979. This time Demi Moore stars as an ultra buff Navy Seal trainee who gets more than her share of unfair treatment. Also starring a Viggo Mortensen as the heartless Master Chief and Anne Bancroft as the Senator who get her into the mess. This film will look great on your hi def system especially G.I. Jane in her white tank top(remember that mess hall scene?)

Format: Coded in MPEG-4 AVC at 1080p, with Dolby Digital 5.1 for audio. Widescreen aspect ratio is 2.35:1.

Identity [Blu-ray]
(Sony Pictures)

A flick from 2003 that stars John Cusack, Ray Liotta, and Amana Peet. This movie is about 10 strangers who find themselves being killed off in a far away Nevada motel. Directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, Kate & Leopold, Cop Land), this is a movie you may not want to watch alone on a rainy evening.

Format: Coded in MPEG-4 AVC at 1080p, with Dolby Digital 5.1 for audio. Widescreen aspect ratio is 2.40:1.

King Arthur – Extended Director’s Cut [Blu-ray]
(Buena Vista Home Entertainment)

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, this tail of King Arthur is a great addition to your hi def library. This movie stars Clive Owen as King Arthur, Ioan Gruffudd as Lancelot, Mads Mikkelsen (as a badass samuri influenced knight), and a younger (if she can get any younger) Kiera Knightly.

This movie didn’t do so well in theatres, but has seen a lot of DVD resurgence as viewers crave more medieval blood curdling action. If it wasn’t for Lord of the Rings, I may have overlooked this film along with Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven and Troy. Now I can’t get enough of chain mail. 300? How great will that be in hi def?

Format: Widescreen format, 1080p, coded in MPEG-4 AVC, Dolby Digital 5.1.

Volver [Blu-ray] (Sony Pictures)

Starring: Penelope Cruz, Antonio de la Torre and Yohana Cobo.

Set in Spain, this 2006 film about 3 generations of women, the death of an Aunt, and the murder of Raimunda’s (Penelope Cruz) husband that leads to suspense and mystery.

Format: Coded in MPEG-4 AVC at 1080p, with Dolby Digital 5.1 for audio. Widescreen aspect ratio is 2.35:1.
