Verizon launched a new $69.99 gigabit internet plan yesterday but as it turns out the dream price is only available for new Verizon customers. Those who already have Verizon FiOS are not eligible for the $70 deal, and as Ars Technica writes can cost existing customers up to $200 per month for the increased speeds.
The Verizon Fios Gigabit Connection offers download speeds up to 940 Mbps and uploads as fast as 880 Mbps. The plan starts at $69.99 per month for standalone service or $79.99 per month with a triple play bundle when ordered online. The $69.99 plan would increase to $84.99 in a two-year contract.
In their press release, Verizon boasted that no cable TV provider “comes close to offering the speeds and power of Fios Gigabit connection,” and that “everyone deserves the fastest Internet available.”
But, as we learned today the $69.99 service is not actually available to all 8 million homes as Verizon stated. Existing customers will be able to upgrade starting April 30th, however, their costs will depend on the types of service they currently have.
Verizon’s Fios Gigabit Connection is available in parts of New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Richmond, Va., Hampton Roads, Va., Boston, Providence and Washington, D.C. markets.
