Netflix is used in 32-percent of internet-connected devices in the US, equating to 339 million devices by the end of 2015. The statistic comes from analytics firm IHS who also reported a whopping 8 billion connected devices globally, averaging 4 devices per household.
“Netflix’s reach is a testament to the company’s unrivalled device strategy,” Kingston said. “The service’s ubiquity turns Netflix into a de facto rival – and on occasion complement – to any other given video offering in the U.S.”
In addition, the IHS report touched on shipments of streaming media players, of which Google’s more practical $35 Chromecast dongle surpassed shipments of Apple TV. In Q1 2016, Google shipped 3.2 million Chromecast devices compared to Apple shipping 1.7 million of their more expensive $149 (base model) fourth-generation Apple TV.
IHS called Chromecast a “veritable bargain,” compared to the higher end Apple TV that’s intended for premium streaming and downloading of movies and TV shows, connectivity with Apple iOS devices, and “casual” gaming.
