‘The Lord of the Rings’ extended edition boxed set on sale

It's the biggest and best set of the blockbuster films that dominated the first decade of this century, and it's on sale this week at Amazon for 59% off the suggested list price. The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Extended Edition) is now just $48.99 through June 2. This mammoth 15-disc set brings you Peter Jackson's epic films in 1080p video and DTS HD-MA 5.1 Audio, with more than 26 hours of extra content to sift through.

Putting the ‘die’ in diet: ‘Stephen King’s Thinner’ coming to Blu-ray

ray August 21! This 1996 horror flick tells the tale of a morals-lacking lawyer who gets cursed by a creepy old dude. The curse? Rapid and excessive weight loss. I know, right? Totally a blessing to most people, including the cast of The Biggest Loser and Roseanne.

‘The Avengers’ gets September Blu-ray/3D release date

Will The Avengers still be #1 at the box office come September? Perhaps not, but we have a hunch it'll instantly dominate home video sales when the Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, and DVD versions of the film are released on 9/25/12. Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is expected to be $39.99, with the Blu-ray 3D set at $49.99. The exact details on the Disney release aren't official, but the extras will reportedly include audio commentary by director Joss Whedon; Disney's Second Screen; Assembling the Ultimate Team; A Visual Journey; Gag Reel; Item 47 (Marvel One-Shot Short Film); 9 Deleted/Extended Scenes; and Soundgarden's Live to Rise Music Video.

‘West Side Story’ box set $25 today at Amazon

Are you a Sharks dude or more of a Jets kinda guy? Or perhaps you've never seen West Side Story, the 1961 musical that nabbed 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture. Based on a hit Broadway play that updated the tale of Romeo and Juliet to the tune of gang warfare in New York in the 1950s, West Side Story stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as star-crossed lovers who must conquer ethnic and geographic obstacles in their path. ‘BBC Natural History Collection’ & ‘The Universe Megaset’ on sale

Were you a subpar student? Too busy focusing on Suzy Johnson's legs in the 10th grade to muster up more than a C- in Biology? This week's Blu-ray Deal of the Week at Amazon features two sets of documentaries that will not only look darn good on your display, they'll also learn ya real good like. Now through April 28 save over 50% on both the BBC Natural History Collection ($62.99) and The Universe Megaset ($58.99). The BBC offering includes Planet Earth: Special Edition, Galapagos, Ganges, and Wild China. The Universe set contains 16 discs, including The Universe: 7 Wonders of the Solar System in 3D.

Your heart will go on September 14, pre-order ‘Titanic’ Blu-ray/3D now

Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster, but that fateful ship will sail again come September 14 when the box office behemoth cruises into retail on Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D. Paramount is releasing Titanic in a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack and a 3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy set, and both are available now for pre-order at Amazon for $21.99 and $27.99 respectively, with each order receiving a $3 gift card as well. Specs and extra features have yet to be revealed, but we have a hunch James Cameron will have a word to say about this little project of his.

‘Tom Cruise Collection’ $25 at Amazon this week

He's an actor, an icon, and - at times - a bit of a punchline. But Thomas Cruise Mapother IV has made some great films in his 31-year career, and Amazon's Blu-ray Deal of the Week actually has several of them in one neat package right now for $25. Save 57% off the suggested list price through through April 21 and you'll get Days of Thunder, Collateral, Top Gun, War of the Worlds,'and Minority Report without having to hurdle any couches.

‘Mission Impossible’ trilogy $17.99 at Amazon

It doesn't contain last year's Ghost Protocol, and it is a double dip of a Blu-ray set already released, but if you're looking to score Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt on the cheap, you can't do better than this week's offering at Amazon. The Mission Impossible: Extreme Blu-ray Trilogy is just $17.99 through April 15; that's 55% off the suggested retail price.

Indiana Jones collection to make Blu-ray debut this fall

The story of Indiana Jones' adventures may not be complete, but that's not stopping Paramount from readying the “The Complete Indiana Jones Blu-ray Collection” for release this fall. Only the much maligned Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is currently available in Blu-ray form, so this will be the first time that the other three films will be on disc in high def. Amazon's pre-order price is $74.99. No official date or box/cover art is available yet.

‘Chinatown’ & ‘The Deer Hunter’ coming to Blu-ray

A pair of iconic film classics from the 1970s have been green-lighted for Blu-ray treatment, and you won't have long to wait. First on the calendar is Universal's The Deer Hunter, starring Robert De Niro, John Savage, Meryl Streep, and Christopher Walken. The film is slated for a March 6 release with a very reasonable $19.98 suggested list price.
