The third generation Apple TV 4k released in November 2022 added support for HDR10+, the improved HDR color spec that evolved from HDR10 and expands color depth to 10-bits on screens that support it. HDR10+ allows dynamic processing of the color spec throughout the data stream, making it more comparable to Dolby Vision and therefore a huge improvement over HDR10.
Although HDR10+ has been included on Ultra HD Blu-ray for several years now, we’ve started to see more and more movies indicating the HDR10+ spec on Apple TV. However, the format makes up just a fraction of the Dolby Vision and HDR10 movies offered on Apple TV and 4k Blu-ray.
Interestingly enough, the list of HDR10+ titles on Apple TV 4k does not coincide with the same movies on 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc with HDR10+. Rather, a different catalog almost entirely. We find many Universal titles use HDR10+, although certainly not exclusively. In some cases, original films like Shrek use HDR10+ while the sequels Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third instead use Dolby Vision.
