‘Assassin’s Creed III’ gets released in three editions

Assassins-Creed-III-Xbox-360You may have already picked up Assassin’s Creed III at a midnight release party last night, unless you were in an area where parties were cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. If you missed it, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III hits shelves today (and download servers) in several different editions. The third major release in the franchise, Assassin’s Creed III is, of course, available for PS3, Xbox 360, PC and the new Nintendo WiiU. Choosing the edition may be the hardest decision. For PS3 and Xbox 360 the game is available in a Standard Edition ($59), Limited Edition ($119), and Encyclopedia Edition ($99). For PC Download (Windows Vista/7/XP), Ubisoft will soon offer a Deluxe Edition ($64.99) on November 20, 2012. Assassin’s Creed III is available at GameStop, Amazon, and most big retailers. Read More

Nintendo Wii price drops $20

Nintendo has announced the MSRP of the new Wii gaming console is dropping from $149 to $129 effectively immediately. The new black Wii console will replace the Super Mario Bros. Wii with a single disc that includes Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. The new $129 Wii also comes with the Wii Remote Plus and one Nunchuk controller. The price drop comes in advance of the release of the Wii U, the successor to the six-year-old Wii which hits stores on Nov. 18 and will sell for $299. The Wii U includes the Wii U GamePad and Nintendo TVii which will allows owners to stream video from services such as Netflix and Hulu. The Wii U will also support video resolution up to 1080p. ‘Star Wars: Battlefront III’ coming this year?

Multiple online pubs are reporting on a rumor that Star Wars: Battlefront III will release this year. PlayStationLifeStyle.net cites several job postings and tweets from insiders which point to a 2012 release of a “3rd person Action/Adventure sequel in a high-profile science fiction franchise.” Talk about digging through clues, the sources also found a LinkedIn post from a developer who claims to have been working for three years on a “AAA third person shooter using Unreal Engine and Kynapse AI middleware,” and another post that refers to an “Unannounced third person sword fighting game.” If it’s not Star Wars what could it be? It’s been almost seven years since the release of Star Wars: Battlefront II for PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox, and Windows. 2011 ‘VGA’ Video Game Awards winners

Over the weekend Spike TV hosted its ninth annual “Video Game Awards” (VGA) ceremony, announcing the winners for 2011. The two-hour event was broadcast to over 100 countries and territories around the world. Zachary Levi of NBC’s “Chuck” hosted the ceremony, which gave Bethesda Studios “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” the Vector Monkey — naming it 2011’s Game of the Year. “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” also won Best RPG. ‘Rage’ Demo now on Xbox Live, PS3 coming soon

If you’re looking for a new game to check out id Software’s Rage demo is now available on Xbox Live. With plenty of blood, violence and gore Rage takes you into a post-apocalyptic world called the Wasteland. For gamers who get excited about detailed environments, Rage is loaded with texture. According to id Software President Todd Hollenshead, the extensive details in the game are possible because textures are streamed in to avoid being constrained by system memory. If you haven’t seen Rage yet here’s your chance to get a look. And, those of you with PS3 consoles should be able to download the Rage demo from the PlayStation Network on December 6. Rage carries an MSRP of $59.99 but this Black Friday weekend you’ll be able to find it from various retailers for $29.99. Netflix on Wii goes kid-friendly

Netflix has announced their “Just for Kids” instant watch section is now available on the Wii system. The Wii interface addition may ease some parent’s fears that their kids might accidentally start streaming a rated “R” or questionable “Unrated” film from the Netflix library. You can also set Parental Controls in your Account Settings to block mature movies, but there is no way to unlock a title above the allowed rating once you set it. Read More

Wii and Nintendo 3DS to get Hulu Plus

Nintendo has announced Hulu Plus will be available for Wii consoles and the mobile 3DS by the end of the year. With Hulu Plus, users will be able to stream movies and TV shows from the Hulu library for $7.99 per month. A few titles queued up on Hulu Plus include Glee, Dancing with the Stars, and Lost all of which will stream with limited advertising. (Lame, considering the subscription fee, but what can you do?) Nintendo also announced updates for the 3DS including the ability to record 3D videos up to 10-minutes long, create 3D stop-motion animations, new puzzles in the StreetPass Mii Plaza, and a new dungeon to Find Mii. Supreme Court overturns video game ban for minors

Big news today for the video game world as the Supreme Court has overturned California’s ban on the sale or rental of video games deemed “violent” to minors. Although the ban never actually took place, the Supreme Court upheld a decision in Sacramento which ruled the law violated First Amendment rights for minors. The 7-to-2 decision referenced the protection of books, plays and movies which Justice Scalia wrote “confer First Amendment protection.” Read More

Redbox offers video game rentals nationwide

After a couple years of testing video game rentals at select kiosks, and expanding to several thousand kiosks last fall, Redbox has now expanded the service to 21,000 kiosks nationwide.
