In the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale areas of Florida, DIRECTV has added TeleFutura HD to their high-definition lineup. The local broadcast Spanish language channel can be found on DIRECTV Channel 69.
Bloomberg TV is now available in High Definition (HD) quality for Time Warner Cable customers, but only in select markets. So far, Bloomberg HD is only available on channel 730 in New York City, channel 708 in Mount Vernon, channel 714 in New Jersey, and channel 717 in Hudson Valley. But the hi-def channel, according to Bloomberg, will expand to other major U.S. markets throughout the rest of the year. Bloomberg Television is currently available in 270 million homes worldwide.
Paramount will release “Rango” starring Johnny Depp on Blu-ray/DVD Combo disc with Digital Copy, as well as standard-def DVD on July 15, 2011. The Blu-ray/DVD Combo disc will contain both the theatrical version and extended cut which includes an alternate ending. Ten deleted scenes, production featurettes, and film commentaries are also included in the edition.
Amazon’s Blu-ray Deal of the Week is a 50% markdown on The Twilight Zone: Seasons 1, 2, and 3 on Blu-ray Disc. Each boxed-set consists of all episodes of the season as well as bonuses such as radio dramas, never-before-seen footage and pilots, new audio commentaries, and isolated film scores. Lucas Film has released details on the extra features added to “Star Wars: The Complete Saga” on Blu-ray Disc. The nine-disc set from 20th Century Fox is presented in widescreen 1080p resolution with 6.1 DTS Surround Sound and over 30 hours of added content.
Dish Network has added the Game Show Network (GSN HD) to its channel lineup, that according to TVPredictions and the GSN Forum. The channel dedicates its programming to game shows and casino action. GSN is owned by both DirecTV and Sony Pictures Television. Sister channels include 3net, FEARnet HD, The 101 Network, and Sony Movie Channel.
FEARnet announced they have signed long-term deals with Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS, as well as signing a linear carriage deal with Comcast. The expansion has put FEARnet HD on Comcast channel 1865 in Philadelphia, nationwide on Verizon FiOS channel 197, and will bring FEARnet HD to Time Warner Cable subscribers on May 11.
For DirecTV subscribers, IN THE QUBE will premiere on 3net this Sunday, April 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The one-hour news program is dedicated to 3D news including movies, electronics, video gaming, and even the making of the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Calendar.
HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has been renewed for another year after only one episode aired. Total viewership (including multiple broadcasts) of the episode titled “Winter is Coming” added up to about 4.2 million when HBO made the decision. About half that number watched the primetime premiere at 9 p.m. last Sunday.
DirecTV will expand local HD channel offerings into 16 markets starting this summer, including parts of Louisiana, Montana, Florida, Mississippi, and New York. (See full list below.) The company says by the end of 2011 they will offer local channels to 99% of residencies in the U.S.
Comcast has announced expansion of their fiber optic network to enable On Demand service to Colorado Mountain Communites including Vail, Avon, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco, Keystone and Silverthorne. The service will provide access to over 20,000 video-on-demand choices ranging from movies, music, news, sports and instructional programming.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 has hit the shelves in both DVD and Blu-ray disc formats. The first of the two-part finale to the Harry Potter franchise was directed by David Yates and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. The movie can be purchased in several editions including three disc Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy, single-disc Blu-ray, single-disc DVD, and single-disc DVD with Dobby Bookend (see photo below).
If you subscribe to Time Warner Cable you’ll be able to watch several titles from Turner Classic Movies (TCM) via Time Warner’s On Demand service. The movies are offered free this month on TWC’s Free Movies On Demand channel, celebrating this year’s Classic Film Festival. Classic titles from TCM include Bye Bye Birdie, The Westerner, and From Here to Eternity (see full list below). You need to have TWC’s digital service to watch the movies On Demand.
Sony Pictures is offering $10 e-coupons which can be used on any Blu-ray Disc in the Sony Rewards catalog. To get a $10 coupon, you must join the Sony Pictures Blu-ray Club (free membership) and register ten BD-Live enabled BDs. Along with the coupon, you’ll get 10% off any electronics in the Rewards Catalog.
Friday Night Lights will begin its fifth season on NBC this Friday, April 15 at 8/7c. And, even though the series already premiered on DirecTV last fall (ending in February this year), eager fans await the much-loved series that will finally come to an end.
HBO Go, the streaming service that carries about 1,400 titles in SD (standard-definition) & HD (high-definition), is now available for DirecTV subscribers online. Customers can simply use their DirecTV username/password to log-in and access the content.
This coming July 1st, Netflix will start streaming all episodes of four different Star Trek television series including Star Trek the original series (TOS), Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), Star Trek: Voyager (VOY), and Star Trek: Enterprise. On October 1, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine will be added to the streaming library. The additions will mark the first time Star Trek has been streamed commercial free over the internet.
DirecTV subscribers can now get Outdoor Channel programming On Demand. The VOD content, which includes hunting, fishing, shooting and other outdoor adventure programming, can be found on DIRECTV Cinema channel 1606. Popular shows from Outdoor Channel now available VOD include “Buccaneers and Bones,” “Wild and Raw,” “Tecomate Whitetail Nation” and “Wardens.”
Reelz Channel is running a marathon of the 8-part television series The Kennedys today, April 9. If you missed any previous episodes, or weren’t able to catch any, six episodes of the original series will air starting at 2 p.m. ET / 11a.m. PT.
Reez will run another marathon tomorrow, April 10 starting at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT. The two-hour finale of The Kennedys (episodes 7 and 8) will air later at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. Encores will air at 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT.
Yankees and Nets fans won’t miss a beat, thanks to a multiyear deal between YES and DirecTV that was signed last night. The financial terms have not been disclosed as of yet, but DirecTV was hoping to pay as much as other service providers carrying YES.
