While we mourn the painful loss of Saving Private Ryan, Coming to America, ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, and yes, Murder, She Wrote, the streaming gods have bestowed upon us new treasures in the form of newly added shows and movies on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.
Covering a range of genres and ratings, here are our 10 best selections for everything that’s new to streaming as of January 1, 2017.
1. The Shining (Netflix)
It’s hard to doubt Stephen King’s judgment, but his not liking Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining will forever remain a puzzler. It’s arguably the greatest horror film of all time.
2. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Netflix)
We’re not sure why E.T. has only a 7.9 on IMDb, but if you saw this movie as a child, you’ll never stop loving it. After the movie, be sure to check out Henry Thomas’ screen test for Elliott—then wonder, like us, why he didn’t become a true A-list star in Hollywood. The guy’s great.
3. Boogie Nights (Netflix)
With a juicy plot centered around the adult film industry in the late 70s, a killer soundtrack, stellar cast, and great direction by Paul Thomas Anderson, Boogie Nights still hustles hard today, 20 years after its release.
4. Hugo (Netflix)
The tale of an orphan boy who lives in the walls of a train station, Hugo is the rare movie-for-all-ages by master craftsman Martin Scorsese, and it’s well worth a watch. It’s best seen in 3D, but this’ll do.

5. Miss Sharon Jones (Netflix)
The great 20 Feet from Stardom certainly whet our whistle for music documentaries about non-household names, and Miss Sharon Jones looks like it could be almost as good. Miss Jones has crazy good pipes.
6. Superman: The Movie (Netflix)
We’re still waiting for someone to A) make a better Superman movie or B) find a better actor for the part than Christopher Reeve. While we wait, it’s wise to view Richard Donner’s gem every few years.
7. Just Add Magic – Season 2 (Amazon, January 13)
Live-action programming that you feel good letting your 8-year-old daughter watch is somewhat of a rare thing. With some laughs, mystery, and enjoyable characters, Just Add Magic, now debuting its second season, is perfect for young girls or the whole family.
8. Sneaky Pete – Season 1 (Amazon, January 13)
Initially developed for CBS, Sneaky Pete is drama executive produced by Bryan Cranston and House’s David Shore, starring Giovanni Ribisi stars as a con man who takes refuge with the family of his former cellmate.
9. Amelie (Hulu)
Full of charm and visual splendor, Amelie is now 15 years old and a full-fledged firm cult favorite. A great impress-your-date movie.
10. Annie Hall (Hulu)
Widely considered Woody Allen’s finest film, Annie Hall crackles with crisp, witty dialogue and a timeless theme of what makes relationships succeed or fail. One of the best romantic comedies of all time, for sure.
